Beyond Certification: How to Choose the Right Education as a Doula

A question I hear often from new doulas is:

What training, education, or books would you recommend beyond certification courses?

My honest answer is: it depends on your goals as a doula.

One of the first additional courses I took was P.A.I.L. (Pregnancy & Infant Loss) training. I wanted to better support clients experiencing loss and those navigating the N.I.C.U. It was important to me to be prepared for moments that are often overlooked in standard doula education, and that training deeply shaped how I show up in more sensitive spaces.

But that was my path.

Doula work isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is continued education. I encourage new doulas to think of themselves as superheroes. Every skill you already have, and every skill you choose to learn, goes onto your superhero tool belt.

Ask yourself: What kind of doula do I want to be?

If you envision offering maternity shoots as part of your services, a course in photography or hair and makeup might make sense. If you’re drawn to supporting physically active pregnancies, consider a certification in fitness training with a specialty in maternal health. If feeding support lights you up, becoming a lactation consultant could be a powerful next step. If you’re passionate about guiding families through early parenting, there are certifications that prepare you to teach and support clients in that area too.

The point isn’t to collect credentials for the sake of it. The point is alignment.

Your continued education should support the work you want to be doing.. not just what you think a doula “should” do. When your skills match your vision, your practice becomes more sustainable, more fulfilling, and more uniquely yours.

So instead of asking, What should I take next?

Try asking, Who am I becoming as a doula, and what tools do I need to support that vision?

That answer will guide you every time.
