Before I ever touch a dumbbell, start a yoga flow, or press play on my playlist, I pause for a moment of intention. For me, movement isn’t just about shaping my body. It’s about centering my mind. As a mother, a doula, and a woman who’s been through seasons of both strength and exhaustion, I’ve learned that how I talk to myself before a workout matters just as much as how I move.
Affirmations have become my mental warm-up. They remind me that this time is sacred, this body is worthy, and this effort is enough.
Here are the five affirmations I say before every workout, whether I’m hitting the mat, the pavement, or just dancing in my living room.
1. “This movement is a celebration, not a punishment.”
For too many years, I used to move my body out of guilt. chasing calories, comparing progress, or trying to fix something I thought was wrong. Now, I move because I can. Because my body, after carrying children, after recovering from trauma, after sleepless nights, still shows up for me.
Every squat, stretch, or step is a thank you. This affirmation shifts my mindset from pressure to gratitude. I remind myself: I’m not working out to earn food, rest, or love. I already deserve those things.
2. “I am stronger than I was yesterday.”
This one is simple but powerful. Strength doesn’t always mean lifting heavier or running faster. Sometimes it means showing up despite fatigue, choosing grace over perfection, or simply finishing a routine when my mind says, “stop.”
When I say this affirmation, I think of all the ways I’ve grown (emotionally, spiritually, mentally), and how my strength has never just been physical.
3. “I move at my own pace, and that’s enough.”
Whether you’re postpartum, on a healing journey, or just learning to love your body again, this affirmation helps drown out comparison. Social media can make it seem like everyone’s on a fast track to transformation, but progress is deeply personal.
On days when I feel slower or less motivated, I whisper this to myself: My pace is mine. My growth is mine. My path is mine.
And that’s enough.
4. “Every breath brings me balance.”
Breathing is the foundation of movement. It’s what connects the mind to the body. Before I begin any workout, I take a few intentional breaths. In through my nose, out through my mouth, and remind myself that balance doesn’t mean perfection. It means staying present.
If my mind starts racing or my body feels tense, I use this affirmation to come back to the moment. With every inhale, I draw in energy. With every exhale, I let go of stress, expectations, and self-doubt.
5. “This is my time, and I deserve it.”
As a mom of six, time is a luxury. My days are filled with homeschooling, birthwork, and caring for everyone else’s needs. For a long time, I felt guilty carving out space for myself. But now, I see movement as an act of self-respect.
This is my time to pour back into me. To sweat, to breathe, to remember that I’m more than my responsibilities.
So before every workout, I look at my reflection and say: This moment is mine. I deserve to feel good in my body. I deserve to move with joy.
Your Turn: Journal It Out
Take a few minutes today and write your own five affirmations for movement. Ask yourself:
What do I need to hear before I move my body?
What helps me show up with love instead of pressure?
What words make me feel connected to my strength?
Let your affirmations guide you, not just in fitness, but in every act of self-care and healing.
Because at the end of the day, movement is medicine. And the words you speak to yourself before you begin? They’re the first dose.
