The Second Trimester: Finding Your Flow and Celebrating Milestones

The second trimester is often called the “golden phase” of pregnancy. If your first trimester felt like a fog of nausea, fatigue, and uncertainty, this next chapter tends to bring a breath of fresh air.

You may finally start to feel more like yourself again. Your energy returns, your appetite stabilizes, and you might even begin to enjoy your pregnancy. This is the stage where your baby bump starts to show, your body feels more balanced, and you begin to connect with your growing little one in new, exciting ways.

Here’s what to expect, and how to celebrate the small (and big) milestones along the way.

1. That Beautiful Baby Bump

During the second trimester, roughly weeks 13 through 27, your belly starts to make its debut. Some people show early, others a bit later, but either way, it’s an incredible moment.

You might find yourself instinctively touching your belly more often, talking to your baby, or smiling at your reflection. It’s your body’s way of saying, “We’re really doing this.”

Doula tip: Embrace maternity clothes when you’re ready... not because you have to, but because comfort matters. Stretchy leggings, soft dresses, and breathable fabrics will be your best friends.

2. Feeling Baby’s First Movements

One of the most magical moments of pregnancy is feeling your baby move for the first time. It might feel like flutters, bubbles, or soft taps around weeks 16 to 22. These tiny sensations are called quickening, and they’re the first signs of your baby stretching and exploring their space.

Every pregnancy is different. Some feel movement earlier, especially if it’s not their first. Don’t worry if you’re not sure right away. Once it happens, you’ll never forget it.

3. The Anatomy Scan

Around 18 to 22 weeks, you’ll have your anatomy ultrasound. This is a big milestone. Your provider will check your baby’s development, measure growth, and examine organs and structures.

It’s also when you can often find out your baby’s sex (if you choose to).

Even though it’s a medical appointment, it’s also deeply emotional. For many parents, it’s the first time they really see their baby's tiny fingers, profile, and all.

Doula tip: Take someone with you if you can. It’s a moment worth sharing.

4. Boost in Energy (and Nesting Begins!)

After weeks of fatigue, many parents feel a noticeable boost in energy during the second trimester. This is a great time to start preparing your space, organizing baby gear, or taking prenatal classes.

But remember: this isn’t a race to “get everything done.” Instead, use this time to move at your own pace. Maybe you can try journaling, planning your birth preferences, or scheduling a birth planning session with your doula.

5. Body Changes and Self-Care

Your body is doing extraordinary work  expanding, circulating more blood, and supporting new life. You might notice changes like:

  • A growing belly and fuller breasts

  • Increased appetite

  • Stretch marks or skin changes

  • A stronger sense of smell or taste

This is your cue to lean into self-care. Hydrate, stretch gently, moisturize, and make time for rest. Movement like prenatal yoga, walks, or swimming can help reduce aches and improve circulation (always talk to your doctor first).

6. Emotional Shifts

With hormones balancing out, many people report feeling more emotionally steady during the second trimester. But you may also begin to reflect on the reality of what’s ahead: parenthood, birth, and identity shifts.

That’s normal, too.

If you haven’t already, this is a great time to start connecting with your support team: your partner, doula, or therapist, to prepare emotionally for the next stages.

7. Bonding With Baby

As your baby’s movements become more noticeable, you’ll find new ways to bond . Try talking, singing, rubbing your belly, or even reading aloud. This connection helps both of you regulate and grow closer long before birth.

Doula tip: Play your favorite calming music regularly. Babies can begin to recognize familiar sounds and voices from inside the womb!

Final Thoughts

The second trimester is a time of growth, renewal, and deeper connection. It’s the sweet spot between the uncertainty of early pregnancy and the anticipation of the final stretch.

Celebrate this season. Take photos. Write letters to your baby. Let yourself feel good when the moments allow it. You deserve to enjoy this part of the journey, too.
