As a doula, I know how much love, energy, and commitment goes into providing breast milk for your baby. Whether you’re pumping occasionally or storing a full freezer stash, knowing the safe storage guidelines ensures your “liquid gold” stays fresh and nourishing.
Here’s a simple breakdown of safe storage times recommended by experts like the CDC and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.
Freshly Expressed Breast Milk
Room Temperature (up to 77°F / 25°C): Safe for up to 4 hours
Refrigerator (40°F / 4°C): Safe for up to 4 days
Freezer (0°F / -18°C or colder): Best used within 6 months, but safe for up to 12 months
Thawed Breast Milk (previously frozen)
Refrigerator: Safe for up to 24 hours after thawing
Do NOT refreeze thawed breast milk
Milk Left After a Feeding
Once your baby has fed from a bottle, bacteria from their mouth may mix with the milk.
Use within 2 hours after feeding begins.
Discard any leftovers after that window.
Tips for Safe Storage
Use clean containers: Glass bottles or BPA-free plastic bottles, or breast milk storage bags made specifically for freezing.
Label everything: Write the date (and time, if possible) before storing.
Store in small amounts: 2–4 ounces per container reduces waste.
Freeze flat: Lay storage bags flat in the freezer, then stack for easy organization.
First in, first out: Always use the oldest milk first.
From My Doula Heart
Providing breast milk is a gift of love and nourishment. Following safe storage guidelines ensures your baby gets all the benefits without any risks. And remember: every ounce counts. Don’t be discouraged if your freezer stash isn’t huge. What matters most is that your baby is fed and you feel supported.

Takeaway: Fresh breast milk can be kept at room temperature for 4 hours, in the fridge for 4 days, and in the freezer for up to 12 months. Thawed milk should be used within 24 hours, and milk from a used bottle should be discarded after 2 hours.
